THE ELEMENTS OF TYPOGRAPHIC STYLE

PROJECT BRIEF    •    design and print an 8×10 zine featuring an excerpt titled “The Grand Design” from Robert Bringhurst’s The Elements of Typographic Style. The zine must use no more than two typefaces. All decorative elements must be created exclusively using the available glyphs from the chosen typefaces.

INITIAL TYPE STUDIES

DESIGN CONCEPT
   •    going into this project, I knew that I wanted to work with bold and contrasting colors. My initial type studies had many different approaches, all that were unique and offered different visual starting places, from typeface choices to color palettes. I also knew that I wanted to have glyph illustrations, stylized in a way that remained consistent throughout the zine.

FINAL OUTCOME
   •    for the final result, I used fun, contrasting colors, which included a shade of bubblegum pink and lime green, paired alongside an off-white and off-black. I also used glyphs from the header typeface to create decorative illustrations that flowed through the spreads, alongside a consistent flowline for the body copy that aligned with the title on the front cover. During my weeks of iteration, I also created a pattern that decorated the front and back covers of the zine.

CONSTRUCTION    •    designed and typeset using Adobe InDesign. The typefaces used within the zine were Aziga (headings and illustrations) and Golos Text (body copy). All typefaces were sourced using Adobe Fonts.
